Operations in Aspen

In education, our goal is to bridge the gap between research, education, and passion for sound science. This understanding will enhance every aspect of our lives.

In Outreach, our goal is to provide innovative, immersive experiences that enhance the community's understanding of, and appreciation for, good science.

Our goal is to develop programs that provide real solutions to challenges based on sound science (ie the need for science literacy for the US) by convening, organizing and committing key leaders to pursuing plans that will produce real on-the-ground results to better humankind.

The Aspen Science Center is a 501 (c)(3) organization founded to bring science into our lives in a compelling way and use the power of good science to create a better future for all of us.

The Aspen Science Center will enter partnerships with universities, government and other educational agencies, NGOs and industry, collaborating with them to pursue our goals  throughout the United States and beyond.

Education Projects

JULY 6, 2011 PHYSICS BBQs begin.

(see Physics BBQ in Education Programs)

Understanding that good science education is a key element in training tomorrow's thought leaders, ASC has developed several programs with schools in and around Aspen. With frequent Science Cafés and Science BBQs ASC affords area students the opportunity to learn from, and mingle with, pre-eminent physicists and other scientists from around the world..

Using the latest in technology and instructional techniques, ASC combines traditional education with more innovative methods. In addition to student services, we focus on teacher education, curriculum development, and research.

Information

Kevin Ward recently announced his resignation as president and member of the board of directors of the Aspen Science Center iin order to devote his full attention to energy-related policy initiatives.Ward is a co-founder of the Aspen Science Center, and has overseen its growth into a successful, multi-dimensional education and outreach organization, delivering rich science-based programs and resources to students and the community, from Physics BBQs and Cafes to the Western Slope College Fair, from district-wide Science Fairs and an inquiry-based science curriculum to the (HS)2 gifted minority program. He observed: “As we have grown, we have been innovative and opportunistic, expanding into areas where we saw a need that we could fill”.

This growth path has led The Aspen Science Center into conducting change programs and high-level solutions summits in areas such as clean energy and recycling, convening leaders to address global challenges. While grounded in core beliefs in science, these undertakings are clearly a different direction from The Aspen Science Center’s core programs in science education, the public understanding of science, and related outreach.

To guarantee the focus and continued success of each program, The Aspen Science Center is splitting off programs focusing on issues unrelated to education.

Mr. Ward noted: “To have grown so fast and diverse in such a short time is a major achievement, and we hope to continually evolve as we pursue our goals of infusing the hope and promise of science into civil society”.  Ward will champion a wide variety of such initiatives under the auspices of In Scienta Veritas Inc.

Physics-Is-For-Kids BBQ takes a dive into—the Brain!

Have you ever thought about the massive computing power of the brain? Or its ability to comprehend and use concepts that are counterintuitive (like Heisenberg's uncertainty Principle)? Or using "fuzzy logic" (the ability to see connections between completely unrelated concepts--something that even the most powerful computers have trouble with)? Or the savant who memorized pi to 22,514 decimals?

Conciousness has perplexed philosophers and scientists for millenia, and we aren't going to tackle that (although we could!). We are examining, in depth, the amazing neurological machine that is the human brain---a wondrously powerful machine that can construct theories that accurately describe the universe, or be focused entirely on playing "Angry Birds". (The purpose of our BBQs are to ensure that your kid's brains are focused on the former, not the latter!)
